Question by ?~BoxerMom~?~Taren~?: Can multiple Birds get along in one Huge cage?
I was wondering if a Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, and 2 African Grey parrots can get along with one another if all 4 are in one cage like this:

The Ultimate package which comes with allot so the birds will never get bored, but I want to make sure the birds will all get along, which genders should I get as an added measure ????
I will go to talk to my friend’s cousin she has around 11 large parrots of his own and owns a shop for exotic animals(sells supplies not animals)

My friend never gives her birds attention..what should I do?
Category: Macaw Food
Question by Trin Cancer-Crab: My friend never gives her birds attention..what should I do?
So my friend has two macaws in two separate cages: Cuddles and Rainbow. Rainbow is red and cuddles is a blue and gold macaw and they are both in cages that was small enough that it only has one perch and water and food dishes in the bottom. They don’t really get to move around lot but they cry out for attention all the time. She also has 10 cockatiels in the same cage which has become completely unsanitary and some of them had babies which died in the conditions of the cage. She also has two doves cramped up on top of the cockatiel cage in a small cage where its hard for them to move from one single position and they get so bored they are nearly bare from plucking all of their feathers.
See my friend also has over twenty cats she refuses to give away and 15 of those cats life with her (she is 16 and lives by herself in a house her dad pays off just for her) and she just bought a dog. Her excuse for not paying attention to her birds is that they are at her mom’s house so she doesn’t have time for them but those birds are so desperate for attention. I got to hold one once (I have handled birds before, yes I know the dangers of macaws. My family has been owning birds for years) and it just seemed so distant and unused to human touch. worried. but it warmed up to me for a little while. I just don’t think birds that beautiful should be treated like that. Should I call a rescue center?
I just feel really bad about the birds…My friend is sort of spoiled (As you can tell from the house her dad is buying just for her sake so she can have sex with random men in her own home). Birds are generally so social and macaws demand a ton of attention. I have been going over a lot recently to try and give the macaws and other birds more attention. it’s just difficult when they aren’t used to it if you known what I mean…
The macaws feathers are sort of greasy, probably from being forced to live in their own filth. The cockatiels, when I try handling them, seem comfortable than the macaws about being held. I have tried hinting it out to her about the animals (she was 10 cats at her mom’s house) today while I was handling the macaw Rainbow. I asked her why she couldn’t bring the birds with her to her dads to have more attention and all she said was “her mom wouldn’t let her and trust her, if I still owned birds I would know how old it gets”. Rainbow wouldn’t even look at her. I’m trying to be careful with the birds since they are so edgy about human contact until I can call someone (our phone is out, it will be back soon) but I want to give them a little love I suppose. They aren’t too bad about it. If they were too scared they would snap my fingers off but it does take awhile each day before they come out to me. Hours and hours…it annoys Ashley actually that i spend so much time with her birds lately.
She has mainly only used the birds to show off when people talk about parrots. someone will say “parrots are so pretty” and she’ll burst out with how many she has…it annoys me…
She tries telling me I am not ready to handle her birds like I do but my family has owned birds for years. I don’t have one right now only because I want to wait til I am financially secure to get another. With how many animals she has her mom had to take up 3 jobs just to feed them all!

Question by PetzrLuv!: Can all these DIFFERENT types of birds get along in ONE cage?
I was wondering if I got 2 Scarlet Macaw, 1 Blue and Gold Macaw, 1 Green-winged Macaw, can all get along well in a cage together?
A cage like this for inside:http://www.cagesbydesign.com/p-127-hybrid-bird-cages-72h-x-144l-x-48d-h3.aspx\
And a cage like this for outside:
http://www.cagesbydesign.com/p-519-six-foot-diameter-garden-cat-enclosure-outdoor-cat-condo.aspx
I know its for cats but the birds will have their own room in the house and I would like to have the connector from the house to the outdoor cage. What genders should for each breed?
I was also thinking of a Hyacinth Macaw but that a little too big correct?

Answer by brucemoko
No offense, but asking this question indicates that you need to do a lot of homework before getting four macaws.
The first cage is large enough, but there’s no way to tell if they’ll all get along. From what I can tell of the “outdoor” cage, it won’t hold up against macaw beaks.
Hyacinth macaws are not significantly larger than the green-wing.
The personality of these birds does not vary that much by gender; however, you will have to worry about them pairing up and trying to chase the others away.

Answer by Suzi Q
You’re right about one thing – they are way different:)
Chickens and parrots have very little in common, and the housing requirement for each are completely different. While chickens can be kept in a wooden coop with chicken wire fences, macaws and other large parrots cannot. Why? Because parrots chew on everything and use their beak to move around.
Materials that are safe for poulty are not safe for chewing, climbing birds. Most cage wire is coated with zinc. Zinc can cause heavy metal poisoning.
Wood is a whole different problem. Most of it is treated, and toxic to birds. Macaws chew. Not only would they be exposed to toxin, but also risk ingestion of wood, or escape from the enclosure after chewing it apart.
In addition – you can’t paint the wood, or treat it with anything. So even if you find untreated wood – you’ll have to leave it that way. Untreated wood will absorb moisture, causing mold, mildew and fungus growth.
The only practical cage for a large parrot is a heavy duty welded wire cage that is made of stainless steel, or is coated with bird-safe, baked-on enamel powder coat. Both of these will house a parrot safely, without risk of escape, or poisoning.
There are custom cages that have wood frames on the exterior of the cage – but the birds can’t touch the wood. While these cages are attractive – they are also very expensive.
Save your time and your money. If you are going to invest in a bird that may outlive you…make sure it has a decent home that will last for many, many years.
If you are looking for a cage, I have a recommedation. Prevue has economical cages for all sizes of birds. Their cages are sold everywhere, but one place has the lowest prices…Future Pets.
When looking for a cage, choose the cage you want, find out who makes it, go to their site and find out who sells them, and then shop around. There is a massive difference in pricing from one vendor to another.
Here is a great example of an affordable Prevue cage sold at Future Pets for $ 349:

Here is the exact same cage, at Dr Fosters and Smith for $ 549:

Question by Coconut: I want to start working with birds…?
Recently, my grandfather passed away. I went to Jamaica, where he lived to be at the funeral. And there at his house was a green parrot. I’m not sure the type. But every morning and every afternoon, Petey, the bird, will call for grandpa; religiously. After staying a week in Jamaica and taking care of Petey and getting to know him, I have realized that I would love to work with birds. More specifically, macaws as we used to own when I lived in Jamaica. I was thinking to work at a pet shop, but thought that if I could possibly work along side a breeder, then it would be wonderful. Do you guys have any suggestions? I would love to own a macaw in the future, but I want first hand experience first. Do you think a breeder would take up someone? I’m not looking for money, just experience.
I live in FL and it would be great to know if you close by and wouldnt mind me working with you

most birds won’t readily take citrus fruit. few thing other than humans seem to enjoy eating them. Citrus can be bad for some types of birds. I know a vet told me not to give much citrus to a ring necked parrot. This being said most bird seed/food has citrus oil added. it is worthwhile to double check with your vet for your specific birds.

are Hahns Macaws good birds to have?
Category: Macaw For Sale
Question by sk8rgurl: are Hahns Macaws good birds to have?
We are thinking about getting a hahns macaw, it was that or a cockatoo for those who saw my other question, and are wondering if they are good birds. Would like for people with experience dealing with them, not just people who think they know about them, to answer. Anything about noise, stress, attachment or important activities or whatever they do that is specific to their breed, would help, and I would like to ask owners or breeders ETC. who interact with them to answer, because websites aren’t really experienced, just documented facts about them. Thanks!
Thanks to everyone who has answered, i just have two more questions. The lifespans? they are different on every site! one said 80+ years, one said 30+ years and yet another said 60+ years. Huh? and also do they need like regular grooming?

Answer by brucemoko
They’re generally quite good. Maybe a little loud, but not like cockatoos or the big macaws, and they’re generally easier to deal with. They often talk pretty well.
For fairly long accounts of particular birds, see:
http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/kiwi-the-hahns-macaw.html
http://www.avesint.com/Hahn’s%202001.html
Add:
They don’t live as long as the big macaws – maybe 25-30 years (the big macaws live maybe 60-80).
“Grooming” has several parts. They need regular baths. You provide the water, they do the rest. There’s a nice article at http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/bathing-your-parrot-simply-and-safely.html .
If their toenails grow too long, they’ll need to have them clipped. As with dogs, this is not something they need in the wild (a concrete perch may help in captivity), and you can do it yourself.
Your bird may want your help with pin feathers. Or it may not – some birds hate having them touched. see http://www.ehow.com/how_2065935_remove-pet-birds-pin-feathers.html
Depending on your circumstances, you may want to clip their wings. This isn’t really grooming, but you can do it yourself. In a few cases, their beak may grow improperly and need trimming, too. That’s not grooming, either – it’s a medical problem, usually diet related – but it’s something you’ll need to see an avian vet for.
